These landscapes and flower paintings by the late Peter Coate, an accomplished and experienced artist, are mostly of Somerset and were mainly painted outdoors before the subject.
A countryman and a country lover, Peter lived in Somerset and loved its scenery. He had learnt over the years to watch and wait for each composition to emerge and then to let the picture grow. Estuary of the River Yeo was begun over 50 years ago.
He would choose his medium – oils, water colour and chalks – to catch the essence of his subject: Winter Sunlight at Godney, Bolts Head Farm, Wells Cathedral from the palace garden, a Farm near St.David’s. His Summer Flowers paintings are vigorous and joyful and will brighten any room, and bring cheer throughout the year.
His skill, sure eye, love of landscape and truthfulness were early recognised by the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol by his election as an RWA some forty years ago.
The prices of these traditional landscapes have been greatly reduced, with Peter’s agreement, but their quality is unchanged. Peter died on 29 July 2016 which means that his remaining unsold work is all the more special.
